The strategy of the Theory and Composition Department

The strategy of the Theory and Composition Department, which follows the academic standards adopted by the Faculty of Music Education, Helwan University, is to adopt teaching, learning, and assessment methods that are compatible with international academic curricula and those specific to teaching musicianship and creative musical skills. This is done in a variety of ways that suit the rich background of students, and to use a variety of assessment methods to address problems of academic underachievement or misunderstanding of educational contents.

Theory & Composition Department strives for leadership in the field of music culture and creative musical skills, achieving quality and excellence locally, regionally, and globally.

The Mission

To prepare graduates who are distinguished academically, professionally, and skillfully in the field of music, capable of competing and meeting the demands of the labor market. This is achieved through a scientific approach based on diverse research, particularly applied research, to achieve sustainable development, serve the local and national community, and disseminate musical culture and enhance artistic taste locally and regionally.

Musicianship Courses

  • The history of Western music, from prehistoric times to the Renaissance, continuing with the music of the three eras and the beginning of the twentieth century.

  • Western Music Appreciation, which trains students to appreciate various types of Western musical works in light of the duality of culture and sound.

  • Western Music Analysis, exposure to different forms of structuring/phrasing and understanding more than one method of writing/abbreviating music analysis.

Creative Music Skills Courses

  • Harmony, the science of forming triads, based on the choral four-part writing rules of the 18th and the first half of the 19th centuries.
  • Counterpoint, the science of forming or interlocking melodies horizontally, according to the modal/strict counterpoint, on the style of Palestrina.
  • Music Instrumentation, in which students apply idiomatic musical writing for each instrument of the orchestra, particularly the various aspects of performance styles techniques specific to each instrument, as well as how to prepare a complete musical score and separate instrumental parts.
  • Vocal and Orchestration Arrangement, in which students can prepare a pre-composition and arrange it for human voices or orchestral instruments.
