Mission of the Arabic Music Department

In alignment with the mission of the faculty, the Arabic Music Department is committed to preparing highly qualified, scientifically, professionally, and artistically skilled graduates in all fields of Arabic music. The department aims to equip students to meet the demands of the labor market while contributing to distinguished scientific research that keeps pace with internal and external developments. This is achieved with the goal of supporting sustainable development and ensuring that graduates play an active and influential role in serving society and enhancing artistic taste locally and regionally.

Courses and Programs

  • Fundamentals of Arabic Music: This course trains students in reading, listening, and transcribing elements of Arabic music, including jins (melodic segments), maqamat (modes), and various rhythmic patterns. It covers music from prehistoric times to the Renaissance, as well as the three major musical eras and the early 20th century.
  • Arabic Solfège: This course focuses on developing the ability to accurately listen to maqamat, practice solfège exercises, and master their vocal performance and notation.
  • Appreciation of Arabic Music: Students are introduced to various instrumental and vocal forms in Arabic music, learning to distinguish between them and to identify different Arabic musical instruments.
  • History of Arabic Music: This course provides an overview of the characteristics of music and singing across historical periods, exploring the interaction and mutual influence between diverse cultures, with particular emphasis on manuscript studies.
  • Analysis of Arabic Music: Students explore different musical structures and engage in detailed analysis of all instrumental and vocal forms, as well as free musical compositions.
  • Arabic Composition: Building on their knowledge of musical analysis, students learn to compose original works that emulate traditional Arabic instrumental and vocal forms.
  • Instrumental and Vocal Arrangement: This course teaches students how to arrange well-known compositions for vocal groups, Arabic instruments, or orchestral ensembles.
  • Arabic Singing: Students develop the ability to perform various styles of Arabic singing from different historical periods.
  • Musical Prosody: This course links poetry and music, introducing students to Arabic poetic meters and their relation to musical rhythms, thus enhancing their ability to interpret lyrics in musical scores.
